Maryland plans to raise the speed limit on the Intercounty Connector from 55 to 60 mph, state transportation officials announced Monday.

The speed limit is expected to be raised by March 31. Drivers traveling the ICC from end to end may save about one and a half minutes of travel time with the speed increase.

"We needed one year of ICC operations to conclude that raising the speed limit is the safe and prudent decision,” said Harold M. Bartlett, executive secretary of the Maryland Transportation Authority. “We are confident that a 60 mph speed limit is safe and justifiable."

Before raising the speed limit, traffic engineers examined crashes on the ICC during its first year of operations between I-270 and I-95.

“This is a win for everyone and will certainly please the growing number of drivers who regularly travel the ICC,” said Senator Jennie Forehand.
