A man accused of creating a fake youth baseball league in southern Maryland is now facing multiple theft charges.

Michael Erdolino, 38, created and recruited kids to play in the organization Southern Maryland Athletics Youth Baseball in St. Mary's County last fall, authorities said. He also held fundraisers to help pay for the team, according to investigators.

Erdolino charged $500 per player, allegedly promising team insurance, qualified instructors, uniforms and equipment. But the only thing the league provided was a few practice sessions, authorities said.

When detectives met with Erdolino last month, he failed to produce any records for the league's accounting. Officers arrested him last week in Hollywood, Md. He's out of jail after posting a $5,000 bond.

Erdolino is charged with the following:

  • Theft $1,000 - $10,000
  • Theft Scheme $1,000 - $10,000
  • 4 counts of Theft Under $1,000
