More wintry weather arrived in the D.C. region late Sunday night, closing some schools and raising the possibility of a messy Monday morning commute.
Rain began falling late Sunday night, changing to snow overnight. Most of the area inside the Beltway will likely only see a rain/snow mix with accumulations of less than one inch, which is more than enough to make area roads wet and slushy.
By Monday morning, areas west of the capital will see up to two inches of snow, with the area of Interstate 81 receiving between 3 and 6 inches. Areas farther west could receive up to eight inches of snow by Monday evening.
Many area schools are closed for spring break this week, but others have announced closures -- including Culpeper, Warren and Spotsylvania county schools -- and two-hour delays.
A winter weather advisory is currently in effect from midnight to 6 p.m. Monday for much of the area, including the District, Montgomery, Howard, Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun counties.
Frederick and Carroll counties in Maryland and Augusta, Washington, Rockingham, Frederick, Shenandoah, Page, Warren, Nelson Green, Loudoun, and Northern Fauquier counties in Virginia.
