The Maryland Transportation Authority will gradually increase the speed limit on the Intercounty Connector Friday and Saturday as long as the weather cooperates with the work.

Speed limit signs on westbound Maryland 200 will be changed from 55 mph to 60 mph Friday. The same changes will be made on eastbound Maryland 200 Saturday.

“Following months of careful deliberation and a detailed engineering study and crash analysis, I’m pleased that we are able to safely raise the ICC speed limit to 60 mph,” MDTA Executive Secretary Harold M. Bartlett said. “We needed one year of ICC operations and full consideration of the design speed and geometry of the roadway to ensure that a 60 mph speed limit is safe and justifiable.”

Engineers tracked crashes between Interstate 270 and Interstate 95 during the ICC’s first year of operation and determined 60 mph is a safe speed limit. The change saves drivers about a minute and a half from end to end.
