An historic tradition marked Easter Monday 2013 in the nation’s capitol.

Thousands of people turned out for African-American Day at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. The festivities included animal demonstrations, live entertainment, relay-style games and visits from the Easter Panda.

The zoo started hosting the event in 1891 when African-Americans were not allowed to attend the Easter Egg Roll at the White House. The event has grown over the years to include all families and visitors in the metro area.

Zoo officials told WTOP.com that they expected at least 20,000 visitors to attend the free event.
