The mother of a missing 5-year-old boy will now face a felony charge, Fairfax County Police have revealed.
A felony parental abduction warrant was issued Sunday by police against Becky Love, whom authorities believe is heading to the West Coast with her son. WTOP-FM reported that police have tracked the mother and child from BWI Airport to Birmingham, Alabama. However, their present whereabouts are unknown.
Cameron Serafin should have been returned to his father on April 7.
Instead, authorities say, his mother, Becky Love, altered their appearances, dyeing Cameron’s hair dark brown, and left her car behind in an Arlington shopping center to avoid detection. The child seat was missing, but what appears to be a passport photo of the boy was found in the vehicle, News4’s Pat Collins reported.
Love also took $6,100 in cash out of her bank account and then closed the account.
A police spokesperson said the boy's mother failed to comply with the custody arrangement. Cameron would spend one week with Love at her family home in Great Falls and another week with his father, Joe Serafin, at his home in Vienna, Collins reported.
“He absolutely will be found,” Serafin said. “There are a lot of people that are rooting for him and for me.”
Police charged the mother with custodial interference, a misdemeanor.
Joe Serafin said Love has had substance issues in the past, and he is afraid of what she might do, Collins reported.
“Just bring him back safely,” Serafin said he’d like to tell Love. “He’s a 5-year-old kid out there, and the care that he needs is back here.”
Police released images of Love and Cameron believed to be the most current, although a police spokesperson declined to state where they were taken. These images reflect their altered appearances.
Love is approximately 5'4" and weighs between 120 and 130 pounds. Cameron Serafin is 3'5" and weighs about 40 pounds.
