As the calendar flips 2013, increased toll rates have come into effect for travelers on the Dulles Toll Road.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority announced the fare increases in November, saying that they were necessary to finance the completion of the ongoing Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project.
A one-way trip on the toll road now costs $2.75 for cars, a 50 percent increase. That rate is due to jump to $3.50 again in 2014.
The fares for two-axle vehicles (most passenger cars and trucks) have increased to $1.75 at the road's mainline toll plaza and $1.00 at the road's on/off ramps, an increase of 25 cents at both locations. In 2014, with tolls for two-axle vehicles are due to increase to $2.50 at the mainline toll plaza.
The MWAA has left open the possibility of further rate increases in 2015. Opponents of the rail line have warned that commuters could be asked to pay $9 round-trip in the near future.
