A high school paid tribute to a slain classmate at graduation Thursday.
Travon Donnell Bennett shot and killed 18-year-old Marckel Ross Sept. 11 as the junior -- a student on the honor roll -- student walked to Central High School, according to Prince George’s County police. Detectives believe it was a failed robbery.
“It was tragic and brought us down, but we were able to come together, and he is always with us,” graduate Rico Pointer said.
“We still had to walk down the street he was killed on, so it was hard, but we made it to the graduation today,” graduate Marquise McKine said.
At commencement for Central’s class of 2013, Ross’s mother sat on stage and accepted his diploma. A moment of silence honored her son.
Bennett is in jail awaiting trial on charges including first- and second-degree murder.
