The iconic Ocean City Pier reopened to fishermen Friday, for the first time since it was damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Mayor Rick Meehan opened the reconstructed Ocean City fishing pier with a ceremonial "first cast" at 10:30 a.m., just in time to kick off Memorial Day weekend.

The 489-foot pier was almost completely destroyed by October's superstorm. Rebuilding efforts began in January.

The pier has been a fixture in Ocean City since it first opened in 1907, although it has also been damaged by previous storms.

Sandy also put much of downtown Ocean City underwater, and portions of the boardwalk had to be reconstructed.
