Police say a hatchet was used to kill a 25-year-old man in Gaithersburg early Friday morning.

Michael P. Harvey was found dead behind a home in the 7200 block of Cliff Pine Drive. Montgomery County police have charged 20-year-old Claude Alexander Allen with his death.

News4 has learned that Allen is the son of former George W. Bush White House staffer Claude Alexander Allen, who was convicted of shoplifting in 2006.

The younger Allen called 911 just after midnight Friday to report that he killed a would-be burglar at his home, authorities said.

Officers soon determined there had been no burglary attempt and that Allen and Harvey  knew each other. They believe Harvey was killed inside the home's garage.

"Our information is that a hatchet was used, and the victim was struck in some manner," said Montgomery County Police Spokesman Captain Jim Daly.

Police say a non-family member was inside the home at the time but was not involved in Harvey's death.

Allen has been charged with homicide. He will appear in court on May 28.
