Saturday marked the beginning of a change in the Prince George’s County Public Schools system.

House Bill 1107 went into effect at midnight Saturday morning. The restructuring law, also known as the “school takeover,” allows County Executive Rushern Baker to appoint four additional members to the board of education.

The first appointee was sworn in Saturday afternoon. Dr. Segun Eubanks was formerly director of teacher quality for the National Education Association. He currently has two children who are students in the school system.

HB1107 allows the County Executive to appoint four new members to the board: one with education experience, one with business, one with finance or higher education experience, and one with management experience. This brings the total number of board members to 14, including one student.

Each appointed board member will serve a four-year term.
