An Alexandria officer who was shot in the head during a traffic stop last February received a Valor Award Thursday for a 2012 incident.
Officer Peter Laboy struggled for his life four months ago after police say he was shot in the head by taxi driver Kashif Bashir Feb. 27. And although he's still undergoing a complex recovery schedule, he was able to attend the Old Town ceremony for his efforts in saving a suicidal man's life last year.
"This is the Peter we've seen why he received the award for last year - saving someone's life in a very serious condition. That was just another indicator of what kind of person he is," Chief Earl Cook with the Alexandria Police Department said.
Cook said Laboy is eager to get back to work.
"Any limitations on his return, that's up to his family and his doctors," Cook said. "If he can make those things happen and that is his choice, we're expecting him back in the cruiser some time in the future."
Alexandria Mayor William Euille stopped by the ceremony to surprise Laboy.
"I saw him, I went over to greet him. I hadn't seen him in a couple of months and he looks remarkable. [He's] an anxious beaver, wanting to get back to work!"
Laboy was honored Thursday alongside 21 other police officers and firefighters for their courageous efforts last year.
